What is Underinsured (Uninsured) Motorist Auto Coverage?

Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UIM) is an optional component of auto insurance that provides protection for you as a policyholder in the event you are involved in an accident with another driver who has insufficient insurance coverage to fully cover your losses. It helps bridge the gap between the at-fault driver's liability insurance limits and the actual costs incurred due to the accident.

For example, if your UIM coverage limit is $50,000, and the at-fault driver's insurance only covers $25,000 of your expenses, your UIM coverage can help cover the remaining balance, up to your chosen limit.

It is estimated that nearly 21% of Washington drivers are uninsured - it is essential that drivers maintain this optional coverage to provide valuable protection in situations where you are dealing with an underinsured or uninsured driver.
